Weather Eye: Pleasant fall weather arrives early, without the rain

I guess at this point, the million-dollar question is: When is it going to rain, and will it be a soaking rain? I’m not a betting man, but I wouldn’t even try to guess that one.

Yes, longer-range forecast models are showing a good fall rain and wind event late this upcoming week. Soaking rains are possible, and it could be windy along the coastal strip.

One of the more reliable models shows the opposite, with a ridge of high pressure over us for status quo weather. We will have to wait and see how this weather pattern evolves.

As we enter fall, computer models struggle at times transitioning to a different season. We have come a long way in forecasting, but still it is not an exact science.

That is why after all these years, I still have a tattered old dartboard on the wall. I read the models, shake my head, lean back in my chair, pick up a couple of darts and toss them. Oops — it landed in the rain area. OK, it will rain. How about that? My father always told me if you can’t have a little fun in what you do, then what the heck.

We managed to reach 80 degrees Saturday under partly sunny skies. We had some high and middle clouds overhead as yet another weak weather system slides by to our north.

We should enjoy more pleasant fall days through Wednesday at least, with highs in the 70s and maybe 80 again. Overnight lows will be in the 40s and perhaps upper 30s in the coldest spots around the county. A classic early-fall weather pattern, minus the rain.

If we are so fortunate to have the jet stream dip far enough southward, we will get our first taste of the autumn rains. And boy, do we need them. It is so dry. If that does occur, be prepared to see spiders invade inside. Have you seen all the spiders outside with this extremely dry weather?

I’ll keep tossing the darts, and we’ll see how that goes on Tuesday. Take good care.
