The Pacific Northwest Newspaper Guild has disavowed further interest in representing reporters, copy editors and news assistants at The Columbian.
The guild served its notice to The Columbian on Tuesday, and on Wednesday the newspaper received confirmation from the National Labor Relations Board that its employees are no longer represented by the Seattle-based guild.
The action comes after The Columbian’s management had requested a federally supervised election after receiving word that a substantial number of employees no longer wished to be represented. The local had organized in the fall of 2019 and collective bargaining for a first labor contract was in progress.
“Our ownership and management team looks forward to standing shoulder to shoulder with employees to preserve our company, rather than across the table from one another,” Publisher Ben Campbell said.
