An 11-year-old child is at an area hospital in critical condition after being hit by a vehicle Wednesday evening while riding a bike in central Vancouver, according to the Vancouver Police Department.

Police responded at 6:32 p.m. to 11120 S.E. 10th St., in the Ellsworth Springs neighborhood near Interstate 205.

A witness told police the child rode into the street and was struck by a vehicle traveling west, police department spokeswoman Kim Kapp said in an email.

The driver remained at the scene and did not appear to be impaired, Kapp said.

The traffic unit is investigating the crash.
