Weather Eye: A couple of warm days, then a bit cooler for weekend

Not too bad of a holiday weekend, was it? High temperatures in the 80s and mostly sunny skies, which sometimes are rare on a holiday weekend. But of course, we are still stuck in this dry pattern with no soaking rains on the horizon.

We’ll see upper 80s today, maybe 90 degrees and 80s Wednesday. Thursday through the weekend we will have cooler temperatures into the 70s, which is closer to normal for early September.

The storm track still goes by to the north, and we see some clouds over the next seven days. There will be a chance for some clouds and light showers or drizzle to drop southward toward us. .

That upper low off the California coast was moving north, northeastward as I wrote this column, but it appeared any showers would be minimal.

Searching through the forecast models for signs of soaking rains has been fruitless. There may be some indication we cross the threshold late next week, but that is so far out we wait for the days to pass before getting our hopes up. It is so dry we really need rain.

Eventually things must change, but meanwhile this is about as dry as it ever gets around here. So far this month we have only had one day out of the 80s and that was the first day of the month with 78 degrees. We are running close to 6 degrees above average.

Our mountain peaks are so devoid of snow all one can see are craggy rocks. What ice and snow is left has retreated higher and higher and is covered with blown soil, rocks, and other surface debris.

Last year at this time we had strong east winds, low humidity in the 10 to 20 percent range and highs at near 90 degrees or better. Also add to that wildfire smoke. So, it could be worse. If we reach 90 degrees today perhaps that will be the last one. We’ll see.
