HAZEL DELL — Clark County Fire District 6 joined fire agencies across the country Oct. 1 in lighting up the sky with red strobe lights to honor fallen firefighters. Engines were on display at stations 61, 62 and 63 as part of the annual “Light the Night” campaign. More firefighters died while on duty in the U.S. in 2020 than any other year since the 1970s — except for 2001 when more than 300 firefighters died on Sept. 11, according to Fire District 6. Last year, 144 firefighters were killed while on the job, more than double the number of deaths in 2019, according to the National Fire Protection Association. In 2020, 81 firefighters are believed to have died from being exposed to COVID-19 while on the job, and 63 on-duty deaths occurred from other causes.
