Letter: Bike lanes need rethinking

By Joe Blatner, Vancouver

Well it looks like Vancouver is starting to drink the Kool-Aid that Portland has in regards to bike lanes and parking.

Where does it make sense to have a bike lane close to the curb? When people want to take a turn the bike riding up is hard to see, especially when a car is taking a turn into the bike lane. Putting the parking lanes outside is crazy.

In Portland on Broadway, many people have been hit by cars pulling into a parking area because it is impossible to see the bicyclist coming down the street. Also why not put bike lanes on low-capacity streets, not on heavily traveled streets? I’m referring to Columbia Street in downtown Vancouver, off Evergreen; I’m sure there are more to come.

These are the same people that think light rail is the answer yes to a total waste of money.

You want Vancouver to look like Portland? Keep it up, it is beginning.
