Heavy rains, clogged drains cause issues on freeways

The National Weather Service in Portland issued a flood watch Thursday for northwest Oregon and southwest Washington, including Clark County.

A flood advisory was issued through 9:45 a.m. Thursday morning. The flood watch is in effect through late Friday night.

Commuters on Veterans Day saw roads with big puddles, reportedly caused by clogged storm drains, including a portion of the Interstate 205 north over Government Island and on Interstate 5 northbound near the Rosa Parks offramp and southbound near Hawthorne and through downtown.

The deep puddles slowed traffic all over the Portland area.

According to NWS, rainfall through Friday night may cause flooding of creeks and rivers in northwest Oregon and the I-5 corridor through Cowlitz County. Street flooding is also possible. The I-5 corridor in Southwest Washington can expect between1 and 3 inches of rain by Friday night.

“An atmospheric river event will continue to bring periods of rain this evening through Friday night, heaviest today and tonight over southwest Washington and locations to the north of Salem,” Portland NWS said in a statement. “Snow levels will remain above 9000 feet through Friday.”

Officials urge drivers to use caution.
