Cape Lookout trails reopen after windstorm damage

PORTLAND — Hikers will once again be able to soak up the amazing views from the tip of Cape Lookout, after the trail along the north Oregon Coast headland has reopened just in time for Memorial Day weekend crowds.

The Oregon Parks and Recreation Department reopened two hiking trails at the state park Monday morning, more than eight months after they closed due to storm damage. A third trail, however, will be closed a while longer.

Severe windstorms in September blew down several trees in the state park south of Tillamook, shutting down all hiking trails on the headland including the popular Cape Trail leading out along Cape Lookout, the South Trail that leads down its southern side and the North Trail that connects to the day-use area and campground on the north side of Cape Lookout State Park.

The Cape Trail and South Trail are now back open, but the North Trail could be closed for several years, park officials said, as clearing downed trees will likely require use of a helicopter.

State parks spokesman Chris Havel said work could begin as soon as this fall, though no schedule has been set. The parks department expects to release more details next week.

The North Trail closure will force campers to drive to the Cape Trail instead of making the 2.3-mile hike to the trailhead from the campground.

The parks department reopened the Cape Lookout campground in June 2020 after closing it due to the coronavirus pandemic.
