Weather Eye: We are running out of time to get our soaking rains

Our nice weather continues as forecast, although we may see more cloudiness today, but afternoon temperatures still will be well into the 70s. It just keeps going on and on. The weekend looks pleasant, with highs forecast at 80 degrees or higher.

Once again, forecast models show a chance of rain next week between late Monday and Wednesday. If it does materialize mostly on Tuesday, rainfall amounts would be little. Looking ahead the best I can, I don’t see any good downpours developing and heading our way. We are running out of time to get soaking rains, folks.

However, I remember once or twice getting soaked by June rains. One year had more than 4 inches, which would be good, but on the flip side, who wants to see it rain every day in June?

Last  June, we had 3.40 inches here in Vancouver — an inch and a half above average. Many of our foothill weather observers had 5 or 6 inches of rain; more than 7 inches fell in Cougar. Why am I having a difficult time remembering last June?

So, it can happen, although it is unusual to get that much rain in June. Outside of 2020, going back to 2015, June was a dry month in each of those years. We often get that Rose Festival low that sets up and brings plenty of clouds and days of rain.

On Sunday, I will share local rainfall amounts from around our area, even though they were on the light side for April. With lawns and gardens in the middle of May and given how dry it is this year, they will need about 1 inch of water each week. I used to set out a tuna can and measure precipitation in it.

Also on Sunday, I’ll update you on the prospects for any rainfall next week. As has been the case this spring, rain shows up in the seven-day outlook and then fizzles away. With our track record, it might do it again next week.

Meanwhile, enjoy the beautiful spring weather and get the barbecue out this weekend. Perfect weather for it. Take good care.
