Weather Eye: Most of the upcoming week looks warm and dry

And the beat goes on. We remain positive as dry weather continues with only a tease of moisture now and then, with no change in sight. We have experienced dry weather before, and we find a way to keep life moving on.

I remember decades ago in Portland as a young child, we could only water the yard and garden or use outside water on even and odd days, according to your house number, to help keep water pressure up.

Light showers Thursday and Friday didn’t even get enough moisture in the official Vancouver rain gage to wash the spiders out. Only .03 of an inch was added to the monthly total, which is now .11 of an inch. We are more than a half-inch below average so far this month, and that amount will increase as the days roll along. After a slight chance of a shower today, most of the upcoming week looks warm and dry.

Our little corner of the world here in Clark County now is officially in a moderate drought condition, and the severe category inches northward toward us. Clark and part of Cowlitz counties are the only two here in Southwest Washington that are in the “moderate” category. The rest of Western Washington is in the “dry” category.

I have received many emails from those of you who live outside the urban area and are concerned about wildfires this summer. We can only hope we avoid a hot and dry summer and stay away from those gusty east winds. It will take all of us to help prevent potential disasters.

On a bright note, I did get several emails Friday from some of you who had a good downpour, even if it lasted less than 10 minutes. Some reported hail, too. Still, amounts were barely enough to settle the dust.

It was chilly early Saturday, with 38 degrees here in Vancouver. I confess, I turned the heat on for a bit, as I know many of you have as well.

Enjoy the clouds and sunbreaks today. Happy Mother’s Day!

And the beat goes on.
