Weather Eye: Despite today’s weather, we are behind on rainfall

The clouds began to clear out locally in the mid-morning hours Saturday, which led to a blue-sky sunny day. Vancouver reached 64 degrees as a high, which is above average and ties the warmest of the season, which was also 64 degrees on March 13.

Our rainfall is way below average for the month, and with only one rain event coming in today, we will stay that way. Showers will be nil on Monday, except over the mountains and foothills. There will be only a chance of rain here in the lowlands. More snow is on the way today in the mountains, with another 5-10 inches. Snow showers could fall late tonight down to 1,000 feet. Yep, chilly again.

The plan is high pressure building inland Tuesday through Thursday, and we dry and warm back up. Upper 60s on Wednesday; maybe an elusive 70-degree high? Forecast models want more rain to enter the scene next weekend; if so, it’ll be cooler, with highs in the 50s. Those would be April showers.

Today’s steady rain should last only a few hours before turning showery. But as the cold front passes, expect gusty winds of 25 to 40 mph. It’ll be a good day for inside activities.

Our rainfall for the month is running nearly 2 inches below average. In Vancouver, we have had 1.25 inches for the month. So the big question is: Will April showers catch us up for the season? As much as I like those April showers and blue skies in between and the puffy white clouds and rainbows, I would hate to see an excessive rainy pattern set up.

As April enters the stage, we sometimes have already reached the 70-degree mark. March has one last fleeting chance on Wednesday to leave a bright spot in our hearts. I still expect chances of a frost for most of us in Clark County. Even areas near downtown Vancouver could get a killing frost with all the snow present on the hills to our east.

OK, I’ll wind down for the day and spend the rest of it inside, where it will be warm and dry. We will chat again on Tuesday.
