A piece of land near The Waterfront Vancouver development planned to be a storage facility is now set to become a seven-story, modern-looking senior living building with a built-in parking garage and ground-floor retail space.
The idea for the change was fueled by a demand for downtown Vancouver apartments, especially near the waterfront, said Dean Kirkland, chairman of Vancouver-based Kirkland Development. It was also partially because of a more saturated market for storage units, he said.
Kirkland also said that having more people living near the waterfront helps the businesses in the area. It means more customers for restaurants, wineries and other downtown Vancouver amenities.
“It helps everybody else down here,” Kirkland said about the senior living building, called Kirkland Waterfront Senior Living. “The great things we know about Vancouver: great schools, it’s safe, great police force and fire (department): We want to harness that. The livability to Vancouver is getting realized by others.”
