Taryn Ries continues to be a force for University of Portland soccer.
The senior from Ridgefield has been the Pilots’ top goal-scorer each of the previous two seasons. Now, Ries isn’t slowing down in Portland’s delayed spring season. She scored three goals in a season-opening 4-3 win over Oregon State on Feb. 10.
She now has five goals in three matches this season after scoring twice in Portland’s 2-0 win over Pacific on March 6.
That showing netted Ries the West Coast Conference Offensive Player of the Week honor for the second time this season.
Ries now has 29 career goals. That ranks 17th on Portland’s all-time list, one topped World Cup veterans Christine Sinclair, Tiffeny Milbrett and Shannon MacMillan.
Bea earns Big Sky honor
After an impressive freshman season, Beyonce Bea has done even better as a sophomore with the University of Idaho basketball team.
On Sunday, Bea was named first-team all-conference by the Big Sky. That comes after the versatile 6-foot-1 guard/post averaged 16.5 points and 7.8 rebounds, both among the top six in the Big Sky.
Bea also averaged a team-high 1.2 blocks per game. This comes after she earned third-team all-conference honors as a freshman, when she averaged 12.6 points and 5.8 rebounds.
“Beyonce is having an outstanding season,” said Idaho coach Jon Newlee. “She has worked hard to continue to improve and expand her game and I think it really showed in the year she had and being selected first team All-Big Sky. She has taken her all around offensive versatility up a level, worked much harder defensively and showed a lot of improvement rebounding the ball this year. Beyonce has been such a big part of our team’s success and I’m happy for her that she has been selected for this well-deserved honor.”
Idaho finished second in the Big Sky regular season at 14-3 and played in the Big Sky Tournament quarterfinals on Wednesday.
Also honored by the Big Sky was Southern Utah’s Cherita Daugherty, who was named honorable-mention all-conference. The junior from Prairie averaged 11.8 points per game.
EWU football flying again
The Big Sky is finally playing football again, and that’s good news for six Clark County players on Eastern Washington’s roster.
The Eagles improved to 1-1 on Saturday with a 45-13 win over Northern Arizona.
Brock Harrison, a defensive lineman from Ridgefield, had two tackles and three quarterback hits. Tight end Dylan Ingram (Camas) had one catch for 12 yards.
Backup quarterback Gunner Talkington (Battle Ground), tight end Aiden Nellor (Union) and receiver Michael Taras (Heritage) also saw action.
Kedrick Johnson, a redshirt senior defensive back from Hockinson, had five tackles in Eastern’s season-opener against Idaho. He did not play Saturday.
