Woodland (1-2) scored on the opening kick and never slowed up, steamrolling R.A. Long (0-3) for 272 yards on the ground in a 35-0 rout to pick up its first win in 2A Greater St. Helens League play on Friday at Beaver Stadium.
Beavers senior J.J. Fuerst found an alley up the right sideline on the opening kickoff return, bolting unimpeded 80 yards for a touchdown. Fuerst also ran for two more touchdowns and hauled in an interception before leaving the game with a knee injury.
“He was still trying to get in late in the game,” Woodland coach Mike Woodward said. “He’s tough as nails. That’s why he’s our quarterback. We’re hoping it’s just a sprain.”
Playing without the 5-foot-6 athlete in the second half, Woodland turned to its biggest back, handing 6-0, 225-pound junior Daymon Gressett the ball 10 times for 119 yards. Gressett finished with 122 yards, including a 38-yard rumble for a touchdown in the fourth quarter.
