If it’s summer, it must be time for summer reading at the library! The Summer at Your Library program is a great way to get the whole family reading — youngsters and the young-at-heart alike. To find out more about this year’s summer reading event, be sure to visit the library’s website, www.fvrl.org.
If you’re a regular reader of “Check It Out,” you know how much I enjoy recommending picture books. You’ll also know that I enjoy creating themed reading lists, which is why I’ve decided to offer a series of reading lists over the next six weeks highlighting picture books with a very specific theme: color.
This week’s extra special color is yellow. Because there’s a big yellow sun in the sky it seems appropriate to begin with the color of lemons, bananas and pineapples. Searching for yellow titled/themed picture books was a happy endeavor, but I was especially delighted to find the development of a second theme: transportation. A yellow truck, a yellow cab, a yellow kayak and a yellow helicopter are all represented in this week’s reading list. Land, sea and air? It’s all good.
Speaking of lemons, bananas and pineapples, I recommend adding a dessert menu to your summer reading afternoon. A lemon icebox pie, banana split or pineapple upside-down cake is a delicious accompaniment to any bibliographic interlude.
