Weather Eye: You’ve been warned: Record-breaking heat on its way

There may be some of you that like hot weather, but I bet even those people will head indoors for the air conditioning or out along the water. It is going to get hot, folks. This is a well-advertised weather event heading our way in only hours. I have been in the weather business all my life and that is many, many decades. I have never seen forecasted upper air temperatures this warm. Vancouver’s all-time record high for any month is 108 degrees, during that severe heat wave back in July 2009.

Before we go further let’s dwell on Wednesday’s weather. A few morning clouds here and there and highs in the low 80s. Today we will be in the mid-80s.

Friday, we jump back into the low 90s, which sets the stage for the next three days. There will be enough of a pressure gradient, I believe, to bring light east winds down the Gorge over the weekend to ensure we reach over 100 degrees.

OK, here are my predictions with the existing records in parentheses: for Saturday 105 degrees (101 in 2006), Sunday 109 degrees (97 degrees in 2000) and Monday 106 degrees (100 degrees in 2008). What about the temperature records? I will list what I have for Vancouver. Be patient, read carefully as there are plenty of numbers.

As mentioned, the warmest day ever was July 29, 2009, with 108 degrees. The longest streaks of days of 100-plus were four days, Aug. 14-17, 1941; three days, July 27-29, 2009; three days, Aug. 8-10, 1981, and also three days in 1942 and 1961.

Record high temperatures for the warmest June day ever will be broken. Here are the top nine warmest June days: 105 degrees June 30, 1942; 103 degrees June 22, 1992; 101 degrees June 25, 2017, June 28, 2008 and June 26, 2006; 100 degrees June 24, 1925; 99 degrees June 24, 2017, 99 degrees June 11,1940 and 99 degrees June 25, 1925.

An excessive heat warning will be issued by The National Weather Service. Remember my predictions are as of Wednesday afternoon. The highs may change a degree or two but regardless, this could be the warmest weather ever recorded for our local area.
