Weather Eye: First 90-degree weather of year on way; rain chances slim

Wow! What a weekend. Beautiful weather with no complaints. It was perfect for any outside activity. Remembering the fallen is always nice under clear blue skies. A perfect day Monday honoring all of our veterans who gave their lives for this country.

Many of you went camping or to the ocean beaches and the weather did not disappoint. It will be hot today well into the 90s, I’d say somewhere around 95 degrees in many locations. Prepare for the heat. Wednesday will be a tad cooler but still around the 90-degree mark. This will be our first 90-degree weather this year.

Then we get more ocean air filtering inland and a slow cooling trend the rest of the week. Still, Pacific storms appear to stay well north of us, although we will see more cloudiness toward the weekend. Rain chances remain slim at this point, we’ll update that in Thursday’s column.

We all know May was a dry month with a little over an inch of rain here in Vancouver, although some of you had more due to some heavy downpours. The official record will show us nearly an inch and a half below average. The average mean temperature was 59 degrees, nearly one degree above normal. Warm and dry. We had a high of 89 degrees as of 5 p.m. Monday and a low of 38 degrees on May 8.

We’ll see how the month of June goes and I’m betting it keeps the warm and dry theme going. I have told you before June is usually cloudier than May due to the rapid heating east of the Cascades. This draws in marine air, and we have that peaceful morning clouds and afternoon sunshine weather pattern.

Along the coast in summer we have plenty of fog when the Pacific air passes over the cold ocean waters. Fog is the natural result when warm air meets cold water. Those brisk northwest winds churn the ocean waters which brings that chilly water to the surface.

Today is our first day of summer for us weather and climate individuals so here we go. Take good care.
