Letter: Preserve freedom, capitalism

By Bill Ward, Camas
Published: July 26, 2021, 6:00am

Where did we go wrong? We have worked for decades to create an educational system under which students from kindergarten through graduate school can be taught that big government knows best. We have built a media empire that with a few exceptions espouses a constant stream of liberal thinking and socialism. Who can resist promised handouts of other people’s money?

Yet amazingly, there are still people who cling to capitalist notions. One can only think that these holdouts recognize that government will spend money less productively than when it is left in the hands of individuals. They may have observed the sad experience of other countries embracing socialism. They must believe in the history of free enterprise and personal liberty that this nation was founded on.

Are we ready to put this history behind us and build on a set of principles that maximize the power of government over us?

We encourage readers to express their views about public issues. Letters to the editor are subject to editing for brevity and clarity. Limit letters to 200 words (100 words if endorsing or opposing a political candidate or ballot measure) and allow 30 days between submissions. Send Us a Letter
