Weather Eye: Clear skies, temperatures in 80s for rest of week

Outside of some morning low clouds today we will see skies clear and remain that way the rest of the week with highs in the 80- to 85-degree range. How about that? Perhaps not warm enough for some of you but pleasant for most.

The weather pattern has not changed for a while with the really hot stuff remaining over the Four Corners region and a cool low-pressure system in the Gulf of Alaska. This keeps us in a southwesterly flow aloft and a northwest flow of air at the surface. Pretty typical summer stuff.

Looking ahead, I still don’t see any rain falling in our area nor any really hot weather either. How lucky can we get to avoid the hot stuff? Some forecast models suggest we could get warmer weather over the weekend, perhaps back into the low 90s, but we keep that at bay for now.

How does your garden grow? Excellent weather for all the backyard gardeners and fresh produce at the farmers markets. Fire danger remains high, so we take good care with that. Our drought continues to worsen as we are now locked into the driest period of the year.

Still sad to go out driving and noticing all the fir trees that face the south and west with brown sunburnt needles. Even along the coastal communities the trees were scorched. Some will die, most will survive. It goes to show you a climate like Oregon cities Medford or Roseburg shifting northward would make a dramatic change in our vegetation. We hope that record heat was a once-in-a-lifetime event.

The coast will see some sunshine off and on this week, but occasional marine cloudiness will dominate at times. It was chilly early Monday morning along the northern Oregon Coast and all along the Washington Coast. Lows fell into the mid-40s which were the coolest in the state, even east of the mountains. Forks had 44 degrees and Astoria, Ore., 46 degrees. Locally here in Vancouver we bottomed out at a balmy 60 degrees.

Enjoy summer as it is slowly waning, and sunsets come earlier now. Take care.
