Vancouver organizers opened a free refrigerator at 403 E. 28th St.
The refrigerator launched on June 22 and is open to the public. Organizers of the Vancouver Free Fridge Project said their goal is to help support people experiencing economic insecurity. Donations from community members have supported the effort.
The colorful pantry stands on the property’s front yard, and it’s decorated with mushrooms, filled with hygiene products and a refrigerator full of food.
Greta Anderson, one of the organizers, said it’s been a collaborative project.
“We’ve had the problem of having too many donations and not enough people, but it’s a good problem to have and has been a positive experience,” said Anderson.
In an email to The Columbian, organizers said mutual aid has been a big contributing factor in their efforts to establish a free fridge and announced in a Facebook post that they were working on setting up a second free fridge. A GoFundMe was created and has raised over $3,000 as of Monday.
