Letter: Avoid looking like Portland

By Karen Hopson, Vancouver
Published: February 11, 2021, 6:00am

I was in Portland the other day and was horrified at the homelessness, the tents, the garbage. All along the Interstate 5 corridor there is a plethora of tents and garbage and if you drive down N.E. 33rd Avenue, it is disgusting.

I wrote to Mayor Wheeler to express my disgust and asked why nothing is being done about this problem. Not only is it ugly, it is dangerous and unsanitary.

I am also writing to the mayor of Vancouver, to express my concern that our city may befall the same fate. I hope there is something we can do before we look like Portland. In Forbes magazine, they wrote an article this year called “Death Of A City: The Portland Story?” (Forbes, Jan. 28). How can we keep our city clean and free of tents and garbage?

We encourage readers to express their views about public issues. Letters to the editor are subject to editing for brevity and clarity. Limit letters to 200 words (100 words if endorsing or opposing a political candidate or ballot measure) and allow 30 days between submissions. Send Us a Letter
