A fire that was reported at 12:16 a.m. Saturday killed an east Vancouver family’s pets.

Vancouver firefighters were called to 4710 N.E. 137th Ave. to find all three residents had fled the one-story house. However, four dogs and two cats were unable to make it out and were found dead in the home, according to a family member.

Firefighters were able to quickly extinguish the fire, then switched to overhaul mode to try to save as many unopened Christmas gifts, photographs and personal items as possible. The American Red Cross was called to assist the residents.

In all, 19 firefighters were on the scene. A city fire marshal was called to investigate the cause of the fire.
