PORTLAND — Portland police released the name of the person suspected of taking cars at gunpoint before police fatally shot him on Interstate 5 and also said Wednesday he did not shoot a woman as previously reported.

The Portland Police Bureau said Wednesday that police shot and killed 30-year-old Brandon Keck on Monday. Keck is associated with Bellingham and Vancouver addresses.

Police previously said officer John Hughes of the Portland Police Bureau shot Keck and is on administrative leave while an investigation into the incident is conducted.

Police also reversed course saying a woman they said was shot by Keck on the freeway was not shot. Police said Wednesday they are trying to determine the cause of her injury.

Police have said Keck came to their attention through a home robbery in which a car was stolen and that police then received a report of shots fired about 2 miles away. Police were then told the suspect had abandoned the first car and forced passengers out of a second car at gunpoint, according to police.

Police tracked the stolen gray Saab before it went the wrong way on I-5 and Keck was shot, police said.

Police said they are still looking to speak with anyone with information about Keck and what happened on Monday.

The shooting forced the closure fo the I-5 Bridge in both directions and a section of the freeway in Portland around 10:30 a.m. Monday. The closure for the investigation caused traffic backups throughout Clark County for most of the day.

Portland shooting

Around 9:10 a.m., Portland police responded to a home invasion in North Portland. Police say that the suspect stole a car from the house and committed “multiple” carjackings over the span of 30 to 40 minutes.

Portland Police Lt. Nathan Sheppard said that as officers followed the stolen vehicle, the suspect drove northbound on I-5 in the southbound lanes. At one point, the suspect got out of the stolen car and attempted yet another carjacking at gunpoint on the freeway.

Nearly 40 police and medical units responded to the incident.

“This is a very complex investigation with the crime scene spanning all over north and northeast Portland,” Sheppard said during a media briefing.

This is the fourth fatal officer-involved shooting by Portland police this year.
