An elderly woman was taken to a hospital Wednesday after a deck caught fire at a residence in central Vancouver.

Fire crews responded at 12:04 a.m. to a residential structure fire at 6617 N.E. 68th Circle.

The first arriving crews found heavy smoke and fire at the back of the residence. They stretched a hose line to the back and found a working deck fire, Vancouver Fire Department spokesman Joe Hudson said.

Hudson said an elderly woman was able to make it to safety, but she was transported to Legacy Salmon Creek Medical Center for medical problems that were not believed to be life threatening. Emergency dispatch records show a call at the address for breathing problems.

The fire was brought under control within 10 minutes. There was light damage to the residence, Hudson said.

A total of six fire engines, a ladder truck and two battalion chiefs responded. Clark County Fire District 6 assisted. The Clark County Fire Marshal’s Office is investigating the cause.
