Several families were displaced from an apartment building in central Vancouver after a kitchen fire set off the fire sprinklers Wednesday afternoon.

A fire engine was dispatched at 3:47 p.m. for a fire alarm at the Sterling Heights apartments, 1221 S.E. Ellsworth Road.

Upon arrival, firefighters could smell smoke and saw a building’s sprinklers were activated. They entered a unit and found a kitchen fire being controlled by the sprinklers, Vancouver Fire Department spokesman Joe Hudson said.

No one was injured.

Two to three families were displaced due to water damage, Hudson said. The Red Cross was called to assist.

Hudson cautioned people to not leave food unattended on the stove.
