I can feel the slight shift in the seasons. Can you? The other night had that feel to it: the crisp coolness in the air, the stillness and the lowering sun angle — the feeling that we experience each year at this time as summer slowly gives way to the upcoming days of autumn. A gentle handoff to autumn as nature begins to prepare for the cooler and wetter months ahead.
And I know, in a couple of weeks as I sit down at a bench along the Columbia waterfront, the mystery lady is bound to show up, sit down on the other end of the bench staring at the river and once again tell me the seasons are changing.
That is becoming somewhat of a tradition, it seems. She doesn’t miss a thing.
It was nice to feel the warmth of summer as we bounced back into the 80s Tuesday and about 80 degrees Wednesday. But even as the sun against my face felt warm, I could feel the conditions changing around me.
On Wednesday night, we had a weak weather system slide by. Perhaps you experienced a shower or sprinkles. That might continue today. The coast had some light rain Wednesday evening, too.
The weather pattern sure has a fall appearance to it. I don’t mean the start of the rainy season; I mean one weather system after another following along in the jet stream into southern Canada.
It is getting close. High pressure builds inland and lasts only a couple of days, and then we get another weak influx of marine air. I don’t expect this pattern to change much for a while. So we’ll see a cooldown today and Friday, get back into the 80s over the weekend, and then see cooler weather and more clouds early next week.
No soaking rains or excessive heat are in sight. That doesn’t mean we can’t get a couple more 90-degree days in September, which is common, but the first week of the new month looks uneventful.
Enjoy our up-and-down weather pattern, and we’ll chat on Sunday.
