Weather Eye: Lower-than-average temperatures will linger a while

Wednesday’s weather was ideal, with highs in the middle 70s, some northwest winds and mostly sunny skies. It was even good sleeping weather around the county, with overnight lows in the 50s. We may reach 80 degrees today, but with that large low in the Gulf of Alaska I mentioned the other day, there won’t be any hot weather nearby.

I’m thinking we stay in the 70s for highs through the weekend, and with another cold front due by the end of the week, we should see more breezy northwest winds, clouds and sprinkles, much like we had Monday.

Vancouver had only a trace of rain, so our monthly total remains at .02 of an inch. Some of you in the higher elevations around Clark County told me you recorded a few hundredths of an inch.

The hot weather that usually resides in the Four Corners area of the county is forecast to build northward next week. If so, we see more 90-degree weather by mid-week. Ugh.

Meanwhile, we enjoy cooler weather. Our average high for this date is 82 degrees, so we’ll remain cooler than average for a short while.

Mid-August is when we sometimes see our weather patterns go up and down, so to speak, with warm weather intermingled with cooler weather and even a rain shower or two. September and October are supposed to be drier and warmer than average, according to the latest projections.

If we do get hotter weather next week, we could also see some offshore winds, which means wildfire smoke returns. We stand ready for that addition to the forecast next week.

It always seems like the weather is a battle of the warm and cold extremes. Staying in between like this week is OK. Remember Aug. 11 and 12? The mercury rose to 101 and 103 degrees.

Enjoy the comfortable weather this weekend. Perhaps, if we are lucky, we can persuade a nice rain shower from the north to drop in and visit.
