Weather Eye: After 13 mostly sunny days, rain feels unusually welcome

I had to take a double look early Saturday morning when I let the dog out. I knew it would be raining but was still surprised to see it raining around 6:30 a.m. Rain falling is such a normal frame of mind we have living here, but after 13 days of mostly sunny skies and no rain, it was an early-morning eye-opener.

On Friday, Vancouver reached a high of 62 degrees, with a low of 47. Our normal high and low are 63 and 43 degrees.

Rainfall amounts Saturday as I write my column are running between two-tenths of an inch here in the metro area to a third of an inch in the foothills and along our coastline. We sure needed the rain, so I didn’t hear any complaints. We have a chance for showers and a thunderstorm today, with hail and highs below average again.

The last five days of April this week won’t be a washout, with the main chances of rain Monday night and Thursday night. That means partly cloudy or partly sunny at times as well. The best way to refer to it is unsettled.

I believe we will still end up with a drier-than-average April. Vancouver’s monthly rainfall total as of 2 p.m. Saturday was .21 of an inch. The driest April was .39 of an inch in 1939.

The Cascades will get a few inches of snow, with wet snow at lower elevations and good powder at the high ski areas. Here it is almost May, and we are still talking about snow falling in the mountains. I think most outdoor adventurers are thinking about summer activities in the mountains now. Mountain biking and hiking come to mind, but we will not have the best weather for that this week.

Enjoy the gentle freshet, and we’ll chat on Tuesday.
