A Vancouver man was killed Thursday morning when he lost control of his vehicle while attempting to pass a school bus on state Highway 503 near Rock Creek Road, according to the Washington State Patrol.

The man, identified as David J. Sarault, 67, was driving a 1999 Chevrolet Blazer north on the highway around 6 a.m. when he entered the southbound lane to pass the school bus. As he swerved back into the northbound lane, he lost control and struck a 1987 Suzuki Samurai parked on the northbound shoulder near Milepost 13, a State Patrol crash memo says.

Sarault was not wearing a seat belt, according to the crash memo, and his vehicle came to rest in the trees beside the road. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

The driver of the Suzuki, identified as Christopher Stricker, 46, of Woodland, was injured and taken to the hospital. His condition was not available Friday.
