Weather Eye: April’s dryness expected to end this weekend as rain moves in

Our long dry spell will come to an end by Friday night as finally a weather system will push clouds and rain inland from the coast. Earlier in the week, rainfall amounts were uncertain, but forecast models are coming to a better agreement. Locally, we could see a quarter-inch to more than a half-inch of rain over the weekend, with higher amounts in the foothills.

That would pretty much lead us away from the driest April on record. Next week looks unsettled, so we go with more typical April weather: sun, clouds and, of course, showers. Temperatures will cool into the 50s over the weekend and reside near normal in the low 60s next week.

Vancouver has had only .09 of an inch of rain so far this month, more than 2 inches below average. Do you remember when we had our last measurable rain this month? I had to look it up: On April 10, we had a paltry .08 of an inch. The other measurable rain was only .01 of an inch on April 8.

The driest April was in 1939, with .39 of an inch. To place this month in the 10 driest Aprils on record, we couldn’t exceed .87 of an inch, which was set in 1909. In 2019, we had our eighth-driest April, with .83 of an inch.

We have enjoyed more than 10 days now with high temperatures above average for the season. The last chilly day was 53 degrees, when we had that .08 of an inch of rain.

With a cooler air mass over us next week, if we get any overnight clearing between weather systems, the outlying areas could still see frost. I think the downtown area of Vancouver is safe now.
