Weather Eye: Last chance to plan last-minute outdoor projects

The first storm of the official fall season arrived on schedule Wednesday with a quick burst of rain around the morning commute but abated for the noontime dash for lunch and running errands. It was breezy, but temperatures were on the mild side.

I was up in the Heights neighborhood, and the colorful leaves were actually ripping off the trees as my handheld wind gauge indicated 30-35 mph gusts. At the same time along the Southern Washington Coast winds were peaking at 50 mph and a bit higher. A robust weather system.

More steady rain was on tap for Wednesday night and we will have showers today and more gusty winds — and also a risk of a thunderstorm. Temperatures will be notably lower. Another weather system swings inland Friday mainly as a warm front, so the rain instead of convection in nature will be more stratus type with lower clouds and light steady rain (maybe smaller raindrops).

High pressure slowly builds in over the weekend, but it will not be totally rain-free. By Monday we should be seeing plenty of blue skies and highs inching upward into the 70s and then 80 degrees on Tuesday. It is questionable how long the warm weather will last next week, but I’m thinking all week. We’ll nail that down on Sunday.

So, if you have any last-minute outdoor projects, be sure and plan to catch this break in the weather later this weekend and next week. It is almost too late in the year for staining the deck, with shorter hours of daylight and moist overnight conditions. I mention that because I need to do mine but I fear it will be next year. My mind is out of summer mode and outdoor chores, leaning more toward the indoor and holiday season.

Do you remember those 90-degree high temperatures in the first 10 days of this month? They are fleeing quickly from my mind. We were still running about a quarter of an inch of rain below average as of Wednesday afternoon, but when you read this we will be way ahead for the month. A quick catchup, huh?

Take good care, be safe in the rain, and we’ll chat on Sunday.
