Half-hour nighttime bridge lifts planned

Drivers heading north on Interstate 5 should expect to encounter delays Wednesay night due to periodic northbound bridge lifts between 10 p.m. and 5 a.m., which will last for up to 30 minutes at a time.

Crews are preparing to close the northbound span of the Interstate 5 Bridge for nine days to replace parts of its lift system. The bridge lifts will allow crews to finish building a temporary support system to hold up the bridge’s 760-ton counterweights during the project.

There will also be intermittent closures of the northbound bridge’s sidewalk this week. Pedestrians and cyclists should use the southbound bridge sidewalk instead.

The full closure of the northbound bridge will begin Saturday and continue through Sept. 20. Freeway traffic in both directions will share the southbound span during the project.
