The Vancouver Fire Marshal’s Office received a $234,891 grant from the Federal Emergency Management Agency for education and outreach on curbing residential fires.
It has received more than $850,000 in FEMA funding to go toward community risk reduction. In 2015, the fire marshal’s office launched Project Home Safe.
“Project Home Safe unites zero fire ignition strategies that focus on stopping a fire before it happens to reactionary fire safety education like fire escape planning, free home safety surveys and smoke alarm installation,” Vancouver Fire Marshal Heidi Scarpelli said in a media release Thursday.
As part of the project, deputy fire marshals and fire corps volunteers go door-to-door and show residents ways they can reduce the risk of home fires. The program reaches more than 1,700 households annually.
“I am so grateful to FEMA and our city council for supporting this important and meaningful program,” Scarpelli said in the media release. “Preventing fires before they start is one of the cornerstones of our fire department’s mission.”
