Letter: Don’t allow court packing

It is now apparent that if the Democrats retake the White House and the Senate, they will add more associate justices to the Supreme Court. The left has relied on the third branch of the federal government to achieve their cultural remaking of this country for the past 60 years when they could not legislatively pass their agenda. This would basically turn the court into an unelected arm of Congress and crash its esteem and independence with the American people.

Of course, this would propel a further enlargement of the court when the Senate and presidency reverses, as it undoubtedly will, to counter the political imbalance. Theoretically, there would be no limit to the number of justices empaneled as each side expands the roster in turn.

We have witnessed judicial tampering numerous times before in central Asian dictatorships, Latin banana republics and communist tyrannies. This path always leads to one-party rule, fracturing of societies and inevitable decline. It cannot be allowed to happen here.

We encourage readers to express their views about public issues. Letters to the editor are subject to editing for brevity and clarity. Limit letters to 200 words (100 words if endorsing or opposing a political candidate or ballot measure) and allow 30 days between submissions. Send Us a Letter
