Weather Eye: Enjoy warm day because fall rains may arrive soon

Today will be the warmest day this week and perhaps the warmest day for the rest of the month and year for that matter. We will bask in sunshine and temperatures in the mid- to upper 70s and may reach 80 degrees. I didn’t think so the other day, but with the current pressure pattern, we may. No complaints, right?

Dry weather will last through Thursday and perhaps the daylight hours on Friday. Steady rain on tap for Saturday and showers Sunday. Snow levels will drop and snow falls to the timberline as colder air aloft moves in. We could see a thunderstorm Sunday or Monday depending on how unstable the atmosphere is at the time.

Regardless, it looks like rain off and on next week, so is this the start of our autumn rains with few dry days in between? Time will tell. I have a feeling the ridge of high pressure may pop up again later in the month, so we will see. We need the rain and a nice start to mountain snow would be a bonus.

Oh, for memories. On this day in 2012, I was sitting out in the warm sunshine but thinking about going inside as dense wildfire smoke hung over Clark County. Two years later, again I was sitting on my deck basking in the October sunshine but heading back inside as swarms of stink bugs were landing everywhere.

Can’t I have a perfect day? Finally, on this day in 2017, I enjoyed temperatures in the 70s like today and gazed at the beautiful dahlias still blooming in all their glory. And was lucky enough to watch several woolly bears scamper across the deck. They had a narrow band of orange, as I recall, and we were going into a La Nina winter, as we are now.

This year, many are sporting a wide orange band, which foretells a mild winter. It should be a perfect day for relaxing in the hazy October sunshine. Think of me, I’ll be laid back on the deck with a cool beverage soaking in nature’s gift to us. Enjoy!
