Weather Eye: Let’s talk about rain in October, rain today and rain to come

Before we wander further into November, let’s review some rainfall from your friends and neighbors for October. Was it a trick or treat with the rainfall? Claudia Chiasson, Carson, 8.30 inches; Rob Starr, Cougar, 10.11 inches; Robin Ruzek, Lake Shore, 1.69 inches; Larry Lebsack, Barberton, 2.36 inches; Judy Darke, Felida, 1.92 inches; Ellen Smart, Ridgefield, 1.0 inches; Jim Knoll, Five Corners, 2.77 inches; Chuck Houghten, Hockinson Heights, 3.81 inches; Dave Campbell, 1 mile west of Heisson, 3.60 inches; Murphy Dennis, Rawson Road near Clark Rifles, 4.78 inches; Tyler Mode, Battle Ground, 2.57 inches; Bob Mode, Minnehaha, 1.98 inches; and Irv St. Germain, Prune Hill, 2.28 inches. The official rainfall for Vancouver was 1.81 inches, 1.26 inches below average.

Surprisingly, last month’s rainfall was really close to what many observers had in September but still well on the dry side of things. Almost a carbon copy. A few had a little more rain due to the scattered nature of the showers. I would say nature gave us a trick instead of a treat with the lack of rain. Of course, it all depends how you are looking at it, I guess. This month is behaving more like it should with 4.46 inches in the rain bucket for Vancouver. We are ahead of the game there.

More rain later today and Monday and again later Tuesday into Wednesday. Then it looks like it will be dry on Thanksgiving and Black Friday. Wonder what that will look like this year?

The Cascades will pick up more snow between now and Thanksgiving, with a foot or so of new snow by then. The snow level will bounce up late Tuesday and then fall back down early Wednesday, worth noting if you are planning to drive over the passes.

Nine years ago, I was writing about a record cold in Alaska where even the North Pole had a record for the date of 42 degrees below zero. Some of that cold made it down to Clark County with snowflakes mixing in with the rain on Nov. 19, 2011. The mountains had a few feet of snow and planned to open up before Thanksgiving.

We’ll chat on Tuesday.
