Clark County passed a grim milestone on Thursday as COVID-19 case total surpassed 7,000 cases only a week after passing 6,000. Four new deaths were reported.
Clark County Public Health reported 162 new COVID-19 cases on Thursday, pushing the total for the week to 920 — an average of about 153 new cases per day — and raising the number of cases to date to 7,080.
The four new deaths are a woman age 80 or older with underlying health conditions, a woman in her 70s with underlying health conditions, a man in his 70s with underlying health conditions and another man in his 70s with underlying health conditions, according to Public Health.
COVID-19 has claimed eight lives since Friday, the most in a single week, bringing the pandemic’s death toll to 87 cases.
There were 501 active cases reported on Thursday, counting people still in their isolation period. That was up from 486 the day before.
There are 53 people hospitalized with COVID-19 as of Thursday and seven hospitalized awaiting test results. Public Health reported that 9.6 percent of the county’s licensed hospital beds are occupied by people with or suspected of having COVID-19.
The first COVID-19 case was reported March 7 in Clark County. According to Public Health records, it took 121 days to reach 1,000 cases. The county hit 2,000 cases after 32 days; 3,000 cases after 39 days and 4,000 cases 29 days later.
The pace of new cases quickened after mid-October, reaching 5,000 cases in 20 days on Nov. 3 and 6,000 cases in nine days on Nov. 12. On Thursday, after just seven days, Clark County passed 7,000 cases.
