Portland police say the southbound lanes of Interstate 205 have been shut down while officers respond to a person straddling the rail of a freeway bridge.
Officers were dispatched to a call about someone breaking into a car on the city’s east side. Upon arrival, the suspect fled on foot and ran onto a pedestrian bridge over I-205, south of Southeast Washington Street, according to a Portland Police Bureau news release.
“The subject stopped there and is straddling the rail,” the news release says.
The freeway’s southbound lanes have been closed from Washington to Market streets while police attempt to work with the individual.
Traffic maps show cars on the freeway backing up north to about Northeast Prescott Street in Portland. The backup has not reached Vancouver, but the police response could cause delays.
