ESTHER SHORT –Dancers performed at Vancouver Waterfront Park recently to celebrate Day of the Dead, a Mexican holiday held Nov. 1-2. Joining them was Anna Cruz, director of Vancouver Ballet Folklorico. The dancers wore a traditional Veracruz dress and performed a dance called Las Brujas, or the Witches, traditionally performed during Day of the Dead celebrations. The live outdoor performance this year was held in lieu of their canceled performance at Fort Vancouver Regional Library. Last year, the event entertained about 400 attendees, according to a news release. “It’s a wonderful event bringing people together as this celebration is more about life and love to the departed family and friends; it celebrates all,” a news release said. The Vancouver Ballet Folklorico is operated in junction with the Latino Community Resource Group nonprofit and offers classes to Latino children at no cost to promote roots and traditions of Mexico.
