Weather Eye: Coast, mountains will soon be right with the season

Our winterlike weather continues, and I found it difficult to adjust abruptly to highs in the 40s. I miss those 65- to 70-degree days earlier. Another strong storm has us covered today, and yet another stronger weather system arrives Friday into early Saturday.

The Friday night storm looked really potent on Tuesday as I studied the weather maps. However, while I was writing this column Wednesday afternoon, models have it a bit farther to the north. Still windy along the coast but more of a typical winter storm than an intense damaging windstorm. Breezy locally with 35-45 mph winds possible.

Keep an eye peeled for tonight’s latest forecast to see if the path has changed. Freezing levels rise ahead of the big storm and then fall. I expect a winter storm watch to be issued for the Cascades. Hurray, maybe 2 or 3 feet by the weekend.

Looking ahead to next week, we get a couple of drier days, perhaps. No worries as we will still remain in an active weather pattern. Driving around the local area Wednesday there were still quite a few leaves on the trees and still plenty of color. After the next couple days between moderate rain and winds, the majority will be gone.

I remember the annual raking of the yard as the weather changed and the fall season was upon us when I was a younger child (and young adult). Boy, why didn’t they have blowers back then? I’m sure sooner or later as we continue along in a La Nina winter we will be shaking our heads as we head out to shovel the snow. No emails, please!

It will be stormy at the beach, and if you venture down Saturday to watch the waves and they are high, keep off the sand rocks and logs as the tides will be running high up on the shoreline. Watch from a distance. So from crashing surf to heavy snow in the mountains, we’ll be right with the season.

Take good care, be safe in the rain and we’ll chat on Sunday.
