As I write this column, we are only four days into November. Doing a quick check, I have never seen the month start out as warm as it has. Wednesday’s high temperature as of 4 p.m. was 68 degrees, close to the record of 70 degrees in 1975. Before that we had 65 degrees, 67 degrees and 63 degrees. An incredible run of above average high temperatures.
The low of 62 degrees, as of this writing, would be a new record maximum low temperature for Nov. 4. But, of course, this cannot continue and after a good rain storm later today and late tonight we will see highs drop back to below average. As the expected cooler air arrives over the weekend and into next week, we may have highs only in the 40s. Yep, dig out the winter jacket.
This cooler air will be welcome in the mountains as snow levels plummet to below pass levels. However, as is often the case, precipitation will be slipping southward to California where they really need it. Snow amounts appear to be in the 1 to 4-inch range.
Now looking further into next week, I think we stay cool and a possible strong storm arrives from the north and dumps plenty of snow in the mountains. Keep your fingers crossed. It would be nice to begin the annual snowpack and get excited for skiing by Thanksgiving.
