Weather Eye: Full moon helps us say spooky goodbye to October

October went out pretty much like it arrived, with sunny skies and mild temperatures. Although Oct. 1 was 75 degrees, Saturday was 62 degrees but still about 4 degrees above average. It was excellent for all the Halloween events and the blue moon. The hunter’s full moon made its presence known to add to the spooky environment on Halloween.

Now entering on center stage, we have November. This is one of our wettest months of the year. So, will it live up to its reputation and deliver the goods? Usually Vancouver receives at least 6 inches of rain in November. Last year was disappointing with only 1.57 inches of rain, 4.34 inches below average.

The current plan is we enjoy a couple of fair days until rain begins late Tuesday and on Wednesday lasting all week into the weekend. A series of low-pressure systems will rotate around a large trough of storminess in the Gulf of Alaska. Rain and showers.

The huge weather machine will slip southward in the Pacific and our freezing levels will begin to lower. Snow is expected by the weekend down to 2,500 feet. The mountains will begin to build the annual snowpack.

For us here in the lowlands we get rain and high temperatures by the weekend, probably in the upper 40s. Looking further out to the week after, the chilly air mass will hang around, ensuring that what snows fall in the Cascades begin to pile up. At least that is how things looked Saturday afternoon. Yeah, it is a way out my goodness, about time for the autumn rains to begin and snow in the mountains.

October had 1.81 inches of rain here in Vancouver, about an inch and a quarter below average. The average mean temperature was 55.4 degrees, 1.5 degrees above average. We enjoyed a high of 80 degrees on Oct. 2, and guess what? We recorded 26 degrees on Oct. 26. Fitting, huh?

Enjoy the next couple of days and prepare for what could be a cool and wet period until the middle of the month. We’ll see.
