Weather Eye: May maintaining its chill, but not for much longer

How are you enduring this cool weather? High temperatures the past few days have been disappointing for mid-May. I mean, when it can’t even get out of the 50s, that’s noteworthy. We managed to creep into the low 60s Saturday, but it was a struggle.

Today is forecast to be partly sunny with a rise to the 70-degree mark, a good start toward summer. A weak weather system moves by to our north, and it may tap some tropical moisture and clobber Puget Sound with a steady rain late tonight and Monday. A small chance a few dribbles reach Clark County, but as of Saturday afternoon writing this column, I keep measurable rain at bay.

Finally, high pressure establishes itself, and with a hot air mass from the desert Southwest bulging northwestward, we get back in the action with 80-degree highs Tuesday through Friday. Right now, I don’t see us reaching 90 degrees for the first time; however, you know how things can evolve. Keep on the lookout later in the week.

The cool air mass that kept us cool and a little damp last week brought upward of a foot of snow in the higher Cascades above 6,000 feet. Timberline reported 9 inches of new snow Friday. Let’s exit winter and return to summer, don’t you think?

Although Memorial Day weekend wasn’t a washout locally, I have fond memories of camping with the kids decades ago in pouring down rain. They are fond because that was in the past and I’m dry and warm now. Still, I’m sure we all have holiday memories that deal with the weather.

This will be the last full week of spring, and the first day of meteorological summer is June 1. I know, we weather folks are always ahead of the calendar. May so far in Vancouver has 2.21 inches in the rain bucket, about a quarter-inch above average. The average mean temperature is running 1 degree above average despite 11 days of below-average daily temperatures.
