The widespread shortage of face masks for medical workers has inspired crafters to swoop in with needle and thread.
Social media is abuzz with tips and patterns for sewing masks. Finding medical institutions that take them is another matter.
PeaceHealth Southwest Medical Center in Vancouver announced on its website last week that it will accept homemade face masks.
The hospital is still figuring out how they will be used, PeaceHealth spokeswoman Debra Carnes said.
“The community wants to help and that’s great,” Carnes said. “We appreciate the outpouring of support.”
The hospital posted mask-making specifications and instructions on its website.

Clark County’s other hospital, Legacy Salmon Creek Medical Center, is not taking homemade masks at this time.
“We’re pleased to report we are coordinating with local manufacturing companies to rapidly produce approved masks and face shields on a large scale,” Legacy’s website states. “As a result, we do not need individual volunteers to sew masks for us. We are truly grateful for your willingness to support.”
