Weather Eye: Cold, wet weather returns for week ahead

Basking in the sunshine has been a popular activity the past several days as high pressure brought us mostly sunny skies and a couple of days well into the 60s. I enjoyed a few days of sitting on the beach, mostly in solitude except for yesterday.

While it was clear and sunny and temperatures pushed 60 degrees back in town, many folks, to my surprise, had flocked to the ocean beaches. It appeared to be almost like summertime crowds. Clam digging had been canceled at the last minute on the Long Beach Peninsula for social reasons. Many stores were closed and restaurants serving only takeout.

It appeared spring break was suddenly upon us.

Locally, we enjoyed weather just as beautiful with warm afternoons and chilly early mornings. How about that high temperature on the first full day of spring Friday? Vancouver recorded 68 degrees officially. It was warm but shy from the record high of 74 degrees set way back in 1915. While 70 degrees is not out of the question in March, especially with the higher sun angle, it still takes a sufficient warm air mass to push the mercury up.

Unfortunately, the mercury will be falling and remaining low this week. We have two areas of cold, low pressure forecast to slide down the British Columbia coast line. The first arrives by tomorrow morning. We keep our highs around 50-52 degrees all week and showers possible every day. Thursday might see the least of the showers.

Snow levels drop down into our upper foothills all week and even the coastal mountains will get some white stuff on the higher peaks. If driving to the coast, you may encounter snow falling. To sum up this week’s weather, it will be downright cloudy, cold and wet. Not a lot of rain, but conditions will be showery. We may have some hail, too.

So, as the sunshine brought folks outside last week, I’m sure more will stay indoors this week. Take good care, be safe and healthy and we will chat on Tuesday.
