Police: Man killed in Camas officer-involved shooting died of self-inflicted wound

A man who was killed during an officer-involved shooting March 12 in Camas died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound, according to a news release from the Vancouver Police Department.

He was identified Wednesday as 32-year-old Edwin L. Glessner. The police department said that the Clark County Medical Examiner’s Office determined the manner of death.

The Camas police officer who fired his weapon during the incident was identified as Steven Forgette, 28. Forgette was hired by the Camas Police Department in November 2015 and is currently assigned to the patrol division. He is also a member of the Southwest Washington Regional SWAT Team, the news release states.

Forgette is on critical incident leave, which is standard department protocol in an officer-involved shooting.

Officers with the Camas and Washougal police departments responded about 9:15 p.m. March 12 to a disturbance call involving a weapon in the area of Northeast Second Avenue and Joy Street.

Upon arrival, they made verbal contact with Glessner, who was not compliant and had a handgun, police said.

Both Forgette and Glessner fired their weapons during the confrontation. The news release does not state whether Glessner fired at police or if Forgette shot Glessner.

Glessner was treated at the scene, before being transported to PeaceHealth Southwest Medical Center in Vancouver. He was pronounced dead at the hospital, according to the news release.

The Regional Major Crimes Team, led by the Vancouver Police Department, is continuing to investigate.
