A fire destroyed an accessory apartment in Clark County’s Pleasant Highlands area Monday morning.
Vancouver Fire Department crews were dispatched at 1:55 a.m. to the 6600 block of Northeast 137th Street, northeast of Barberton, for the report of a residential structure fire.
The first crew arrived in about six minutes and found a home with a detached dwelling, from which heavy flames were stretching outward, said fire department spokesman Bryan Fredrickson.
A woman lived in the apartment at the rear of the property while her mother lives in the main house, which was not damaged, Fredrickson said.
Firefighters fought the blaze from the apartment’s exterior, Fredrickson said. A watertender was used during the response because there are no hydrants in the area. Thankfully, it did not run out of water, he said.
It took about 32 minutes to get the fire under control. Seven Vancouver Fire Department units and another two units from Clark County Fire and Rescue helped with extinguishment.
The apartment is considered a total loss, Fredrickson said. Red Cross was requested to help the woman, but she has moved into her mother’s house, he said.
The Clark County Fire Marshal is investigating the cause.
