A multi-vehicle crash north of Battle Ground Lake State Park on Sunday afternoon killed one and injured two others, according to the Clark County Sheriff’s Office.

At about 2:40 p.m., emergency crews responded to a crash involving a motorcycle, bicycle and pickup truck in the 26200 block of Northeast 182nd Avenue.

Keith Kawazoe, 60, of Battle Ground, was riding his bicycle north on Northeast 182nd Avenue when he struck a tree that had fallen onto the road, according to the sheriff’s office. He fell off his bicycle into the northbound lane.

A group of five motorcyclists were traveling behind Kawazoe, and the first in the pack swerved to avoid Kawazoe. The second motorcyclist, Neal Karlsen of Battle Ground, collided with Kawazoe. Karlsen lost control and crossed into the oncoming lane, where he and his motorcycle were struck by a southbound pickup, driven by Brynna Childress, 18, of La Center.

A LifeFlight helicopter flew Karlsen to a hospital, where he died of his injuries. Ambulances took Childress and Kawazoe to hospitals.

According to the sheriff’s office statement, neither speed nor impairment seem to be contributing factors in the crash, which is under investigation.
