WASHOUGAL — Washougal native Anne Maguire, 29, was one of five winners of the 49th annual George London Foundation Awards Competition for young American and Canadian opera singers. The final round took place before an audience at the Gilder Lehrman Hall at the Morgan Library and Museum in New York City on Feb. 21. Maguire, a mezzo-soprano, sang “Wo in Bergen du dich birgst,” from Richard Wagner’s opera “Die Walkure.” Winners received $10,000 each. Maguire’s voice is recognized for its “dark, opulent and velvet timbre,” according to a news release. She has won prizes from Opera Birmingham, Jensen Foundation, the Metropolitan National Council Auditions, and others. Maguire’s roles performed include Baba the Turk in “The Rake’s Progress”; Die Hexe in “Hansel und Gretel”; Frau Mary in “Der Fliegende Hollander”; and Elizabeth Proctor in “The Crucible.” She also has performed as a soloist with symphony orchestras, including her May 2019 debut with New Haven Symphony in Gustav Mahler’s “Third Symphony,” and her debut this year with Berkeley Community Orchestra as the alto in Joseph Haydn’s “Lord Nelson Mass” and Amadeus Mozart’s “Coronation Mass.” Find out more at www.annemaguiremusic.com.
