Art galleries and local businesses celebrate this month’s art shows with a First Friday Art Walk in downtown Vancouver from 5 to 9 p.m. Visitors can enjoy opening receptions and light refreshments at art galleries, after-hours shopping, dining and drink specials, live music and other events. www.vdausa.org.

Camas

First Fridays in Camas are themed, family-friendly events from 5 to 8 p.m. when galleries stay open late for artist receptions. Guests can also enjoy after-hours shopping, dining and additional activities inspired by the month’s theme. April’s theme is “Spring into History.” downtowncamas.com

Dedication of “Dreaming” Bronze Bear Sculpture, 1 p.m. March 7. This large, life-like bronze bear sculpture by Heather Soderberg is Washougal’s newest piece of public art. The public is welcome to attend an unveiling and dedication ceremony on the corner of A Street and Pendleton Way in downtown Washougal. The dedication will feature brief comments from Soderberg and Washougal Mayor Molly Coston. Washougal Arts and Culture Alliance will host a reception and membership meeting immediately following at 2Rivers Bar and Grill, 1700 Main St., No. 110, Washougal. www.washougalarts.org

Opening exhibits

“Surprise and Delight,” through March 28. This exhibit, presented by Mosaic Arts Alliance, features original work submitted by the public for the enjoyment of our community. Meet the artists at a First Friday reception from 5 to 9 p.m. March 6 at Angst Gallery, 1015 Main St., Vancouver. Regular gallery hours are noon to 4 p.m. Wednesdays through Sundays. Edi Olson, through March, with an opening reception from 5 to 9 p.m. March 6. A solo show by Vancouver artist Edi Olson. Visitors will see original pieces as well as some of Edi’s “unique originals,” giclee fine art prints embellished with more oil paint by the artist. Olsen is known for her coastal landscapes but also paints florals, wildlife and architecture. Aurora Gallery, 1004 Main St., Vancouver. “Couples: The Dance Between” and “Lost Mythologies,” through March, with an opening reception and chance to meet the artists from 5 to 9 p.m. March 6. The exhibit will also include an Artist’s Talk at 11 a.m. March 14. Anne John and Michael Smith will present “Couples: The Dance Between” in the upper gallery. Mike Southern offers “Lost Mythologies” in the front gallery, accompanied by a video installation by Rose Bond. These works dig deep into ideas about human relations, offering perspectives on our interconnectedness with each other and our environments throughout time. “Abstraction — Form & Formless,” through March 28, with a First Friday reception from 5 to 8:30 p.m. March 6. This exhibit featuring works of imagery-based abstract painter Paul Solevad of Camas, and Janus Innes of Vancouver, a painter of abstraction “depicting emotions rather than objects.” UC Gallery at Union Chapel, 806 Main St., Vancouver. “What A Woman Can Do,” March 6-8. This exhibit showcases the works of six little-known European female painters from the 1500s through the 1700s: Artemisia Gentileschi, Lavinia Fontana, Sofonisba Anguissola, Mary Craddock Beale, Adelaide Labille-Guiard, and Elisabeth Vigee-LeBrun. The show also features two related exhibits, “Lace,” featuring beautiful examples of handmade lace, and “Women of Color in Art from the 1500s through the 1700s,” exploring the work (or conspicuous absence of it) by women of color during this time. The exhibit runs from 5 to 9 p.m. March 6 and noon to 6 p.m. March 7 and 8 at Providence Academy, 400 E. Evergreen Blvd., Vancouver.

“Four Patch & Beyond,” fabric creations by the Art Quilt Group, will be featured in March at Second Story Gallery. The title reflects a certain style of piecing by these local artists: elinor peace bailey, Lorna Crawford, Abbie Dick, Dianne Kane, Kathy McLaughlin, Sandi Miller, Barbara Neill, Judith Phelps, Kathy Powell, Patricia Rushford, Jane Walgren, Jane Wolfe and Beverly Woodard. Their show opens with a First Friday reception from 5 to 8 p.m. March 6 in the Gallery, upstairs in the Camas Public Library. Liz Pike, through March. Camas artist Liz Pike will display a new body of work, “Pike Pears” at Camas Gallery, 408 N.E. Fourth Ave., Camas, and will offer painting demonstrations from 5 to 8 p.m. March 6 and from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. March 14 and 28 at the gallery. Continuing exhibits

“In Stillness and Motion; Containment of the Aesthetic,” through March 23. This exhibit features the work of Megan Eckman and Alder Suttles. Eckman’s “Flatteringly Flat” series revels in the aesthetic interplay of pattern on pattern. Suttles’ work centers on water imagery and poolside scenes. “Unbridled,” through March 28, is a solo exhibit of Michael Lindstrom’s latest oil paintings. Inspired by the diverse landscape of the Pacific Northwest, Lindstrom enjoys painting local scenes. Youth art shows

Regional High School Art Show, through March 18. More than 170 unique art pieces from area high school students are on public display at Educational Service District 112, 2500 N.E. 65th Ave., Vancouver. Artwork can be viewed Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. The Art Show and Awards Ceremony is 5 to 7 p.m. March 18.

Washougal Youth Arts Month Gallery, 5 to 7 p.m. March 6 and 1 to 5 p.m. March 7. The event showcases student artwork from all Washougal schools, art projects from community education classes and images from WACA’s “Discover the Beauty of Washougal” student photography challenge.
